Ms. Landow's 8th Grade ELA Class is currently reading the novel "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. It is the story of an Olympian's Journey from a troubled childhood, to becoming an Olympic runner, a bombardier during World War II, a castaway-lost at sea and then a captive in the treacherous Japanese POW camps. Louis Zamperini's, (born in Olean, NY), story is a one man's journey of survival, resilience and redemption as he defies the odds, overcoming a devasting plane crash in enemy territory, enduring the torture while maintaining his dignity and identity. I am excited to share Louis' journey with the class especially within a year that the Summer Olympics are being held. The novel will be presented in various forms; teacher read, partner reading, independent reading and via audible. At the end of the novel, the student will be able to enjoy comparing the novel to the movie!!

Our Earth Science students are actively engaged in the lab, designing, creating, and building structures that can withstand an earthquake. Each group is developing blueprints before moving on to the actual construction. We can't wait to see which structures prove to be the most durable!

It sounds like the students had an amazing and hands-on experience at Alfred State Career Day! Trying out activities like running an excavator, cooking, and participating in tire races must have been both fun and educational. Visiting the welding, machining, and HVAC departments also sounds like a great opportunity for them to explore different career paths.
